The Bodies in Dissent module, an immersive 7-week program at the Home of Performance Practices, invites students to critically explore performance art’s role in challenging societal norms and promoting resistance. Led by Dr. Pavlos Kountouriotis, Andrea Pagnes and Verena Stenke, alongside a diverse team of co-teachers, this module pushes boundaries by interrogating the body as a site of dissent, power, and identity.
Through transgressive performance practices, students engage with themes of care, critique, and creative liberation, using the body to challenge hegemonic structures and explore alternative ways of being. With a focus on both theoretical inquiry and artistic practice, students will deepen their understanding of political and social systems, culminating in a collective performance event and diffractive essays that reflect the integration of theory and practice.
Drawing inspiration from thinkers like Bataille and Kristeva, *Bodies in Dissent* embraces the complexities of contemporary life, prioritizing ethical dissent, vulnerability, and co-creation. It emphasizes relationality, care, and fostering a pedagogical space that challenges students to rethink dissent not only as resistance but as a generative, welcoming act.
This transformative approach aims to empower students as active agents in reimagining identity, agency, and societal change through the lens of performance.
